Year 5 EnglishRelative Clauses3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 5 sheet on choosing the right relative pronoun. A guide box matches who to people, which to things and animals, where to places, when to times and whose to belonging. Pupils fill ten gaps, such as The town ___ I was born is by the sea and The spider ___ spun that web is very small. Page 2 asks whether that can replace which in The cake which Mum baked was delicious, then asks for a sentence of their own using whose. The key gives all ten pronouns and a sample sentence. It follows England National Curriculum grammar for Years 5 and 6.

How teachers use it

Whole-class warm-up

Read gaps 2 and 7 aloud. Both need whose, and the word belonging in the guide is the clue. Ask pupils how they knew.

Talk partners

After the gaps, ask pairs which of the ten sentences could also take that. It sets up later work on defining clauses.

Next-day recall

Cover the guide and have pupils redo gaps 1, 6 and 9 from memory. Those three need where, where and when.
