What Numbers Round To...?

Year 4 MathsRounding3 pages

About this worksheet

A two-part Year 4 rounding sheet over three pages, with the answer key on page 3. Part 1 asks which whole numbers round to 40, 600, 3,000 and 70, with a number line from 30 to 50 above the questions. Part 2 gives four number puzzles that mix rounding with digit clues, such as a 3-digit number that rounds to 400 and to 430 and whose digits add up to 14. It follows England National Curriculum Year 4 number and place value.

What's inside this worksheet

Rounding Ranges

Six questions. Pupils list every whole number that rounds to 40 to the nearest 10, find the smallest and largest numbers that round to 600 and to 3,000, and count the numbers that round to 70.

Number line

A number line marked 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 sits above question 1 as a picture of the tens.

Rounding Number Puzzles

Four boxes, each a mystery number with a rounding clue and a digit clue, such as a 2-digit even number that rounds to 50 and has digits adding up to 12.

Answers

All ten answers with a short reason, for example that the numbers from 65 to 74 round to 70.

How teachers use it

Boundary lesson

Use question 1 to show why 35 rounds up. Ask pupils to say which number sits halfway and which way it goes.

Puzzle pairs

In puzzle 3 the tens and ones digits are given, so the rounding clue decides the hundreds digit. Ask pairs why it has to be 1.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish can write a puzzle of their own with exactly one answer and swap it with a partner to check.
