Rounding on a Number Line

Year 4 MathsRounding3 pages

About this worksheet

Rounding on number lines for Year 4, over three pages. Part 1 gives six lines that run from one multiple of 10 to the next, with arrows at 67, 34, 125, 81, 446 and 995. Part 2 uses four lines between multiples of 100, marked at 340, 370, 750 and 1,249. Pupils read each line and write the rounded number. A reminder on page 1 says a halfway number rounds up. The last page lists all ten answers. It follows England National Curriculum number and place value.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - number and place value

โ€œround any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000โ€

All ten questions ask for a rounded number, from 34 and 67 up to 995 and 1,249.

Number - number and place value

โ€œidentify, represent and estimate numbers using different representationsโ€

Every number is marked on a number line, so pupils place it between two multiples before they round.

How teachers use it

Introducing halfway

Start with question 3 on page 1. The number 125 sits on the middle mark, so it settles the halfway rule before pupils try the rest.

Whiteboard follow-up

Draw a line from 2,000 to 2,100 and ask pupils to place 2,049 and 2,050. Then compare with 1,249 on page 2.

Quick assessment

Hand it out after the lesson and mark from page 3. Question 6 on page 1 shows who rounds 995 up into 1,000.
