Round to the Nearest 10

Year 4 MathsRounding3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 4 practice in rounding to the nearest 10, over three pages. A rule box says ones digits 1 to 4 round down and 5 to 9 round up, with 45 shown on a short number line. Pupils then round 20 numbers in a table, from 23 and 58 to 4,998 and 1,995. Page 2 has three thinking questions, one of which asks for the smallest whole number that rounds to 80. The last page gives the filled table and the answers. It follows England National Curriculum rounding.

Curriculum objectives covered

Number - number and place value

โ€œround any number to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000โ€

Task 1 has pupils round 20 numbers to the nearest 10, and 99, 4,998 and 1,995 test the move into a new hundred or thousand.

Number - number and place value

โ€œrecognise the place value of each digit in a four-digit number (thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones)โ€

The halfway rule starts from the ones digit, so numbers such as 3,456 and 7,555 need pupils to pick out that digit first.

What's inside this worksheet

The Halfway Rule for Rounding to the Nearest 10

A box with three bullet points about the ones digit, and a number line from 40 to 50 with an arc jumping from 45 to 50.

Task 1

Twenty numbers in three blocks of columns, from 23, 58 and 45 through 302 and 3,456 to 9,349 and 1,995, each with a space for the nearest 10.

Thinking About Rounding

Pupils find which numbers in their table rounded up to a new hundred or thousand, write three numbers that round to 50, and use a line from 70 to 80 to find the smallest number that rounds to 80.

Answers

A filled table with notes on the three questions. Question 1 lists 99, 895, 4,998 and 1,995.

How teachers use it

Teaching the rule

Read the rule box together. Ask pupils to say the ones digit of 45, 91 and 99 aloud before they fill in the table.

Marking in pairs

Partners swap sheets and mark the table from page 3. Then talk through question 1 as a class.

Early finishers

Ask them to list every whole number that rounds to 50, then check the list against question 2.
