Symmetry in Letters and Flags

Year 4 MathsLines of Symmetry3 pages

About this worksheet

Lines of symmetry in letters and flags for Year 4, over three pages. Pupils sort the capital letters A, B, C, D, E, H, I, K, M, N, O, S, T, U, X and Z into a Venn diagram of vertical and horizontal lines, with the space outside the circles for letters that have none. Page 2 shows six simple flags, from three horizontal bands to a rectangle split corner to corner, and pupils write the number of lines for each. The key lists the letters and the numbers. It follows England National Curriculum properties of shapes.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes presented in different orientationsโ€

Part 1 has pupils test sixteen letters for vertical and horizontal lines, and Part 2 asks for the lines in six flags, including 2 for a diagonal cross and 0 for a corner-to-corner split.

What's inside this worksheet

Symmetry in Capital Letters

Sixteen letter tiles and a Venn diagram with a Vertical line circle and a Horizontal line circle. Letters with no line go in the rectangle outside the circles.

Symmetry in Flags

Six flags with a caption each, such as a centred plus-shaped cross and two vertical bands of different colours. Pupils write the number of lines of symmetry in a box under each flag.

Answers

The four letter groups and the six flag answers, with vertical or horizontal named where a flag has one line.

How teachers use it

Mirror test

Hold a small mirror against each letter, or fold a printed copy. Pupils try H and N first, since one has both lines and the other has neither.

Letter debate

Pick C and K for discussion. Both have a horizontal line only, and pupils often expect a vertical one.

Design a flag

Pupils design a flag with exactly one line of symmetry and swap with a partner, who checks it.
