Draw the Lines of Symmetry

Year 4 MathsLines of Symmetry3 pages

About this worksheet

Lines of symmetry for Year 4, over three pages. Pupils draw all the lines of symmetry on ten shapes with a ruler and write the number for each, from a square with 4 to a circle with lots. The shapes include a kite, a parallelogram, a regular pentagon and a right-angled scalene triangle. Page 2 asks which shapes have none and which has the most. The key says where each line runs. It follows England National Curriculum properties of shapes.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes presented in different orientationsโ€

Pupils draw the lines on ten shapes, including a kite and an isosceles triangle with one line each and a parallelogram with none.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œcompare and classify geometric shapes, including quadrilaterals and triangles, based on their properties and sizesโ€

Page 2 asks pupils to compare the shapes by their lines of symmetry and to explain why a rectangle has no diagonal line.

What's inside this worksheet

Lines of Symmetry

Ten shapes in a grid of numbered cards: a square, rectangle, isosceles triangle, equilateral triangle, kite, parallelogram, regular pentagon, regular hexagon, right-angled scalene triangle and circle. Each has a line to write the number on, and the circle's note says to write lots.

Symmetry Questions

Three written questions on dotted lines: which shapes have no lines of symmetry, which has the most (not counting the circle) and whether a rectangle has a diagonal line of symmetry.

Answers

A count for every shape and where its lines run, such as 3 through opposite vertices and 3 through the middles of opposite sides for the hexagon.

How teachers use it

Fold and check

Give pupils spare paper copies of the shapes to cut out and fold. Folding the rectangle along its diagonal shows why question 3 on page 2 is no.

Pairs agree first

The parallelogram and the right-angled triangle have no lines. Ask pairs to agree before they write 0, because many pupils draw a diagonal.

Plenary ordering

Ask pupils to list the shapes from fewest lines to most. The circle goes last.
