Lines of Symmetry Check

Year 4 MathsLines of Symmetry2 pages

About this worksheet

An end-of-unit check on lines of symmetry for Year 4, on one page with the key on page 2. Pupils draw all the lines on a rectangle, kite, parallelogram and square and write how many each has. They give the number for a regular hexagon, sort H, N, T and B by vertical and horizontal lines, and complete a figure across a vertical mirror line on a grid. It follows England National Curriculum properties of shapes.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify lines of symmetry in 2-D shapes presented in different orientationsโ€

Questions 1 and 2 ask for the lines on four shapes and a regular hexagon, and question 3 sorts four letters by their lines.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œcomplete a simple symmetric figure with respect to a specific line of symmetryโ€

Question 4 gives half of a figure beside a vertical mirror line on a grid.

What's inside this worksheet

Lines on Four Shapes

Question 1 shows a rectangle, kite, parallelogram and square in cards. Pupils draw the lines with a ruler and write the number beside Lines.

Regular Hexagon

Question 2 shows a hexagon with a box for the number of lines of symmetry.

Sort the Letters

Question 3 has a table headed Vertical only, Horizontal only, Both and Neither. The letters H, N, T and B go in, and a note says to treat the two loops of B as equal.

Complete the Shape

Question 4 shows half of a stepped figure beside a dashed vertical mirror line on a grid. Pupils draw the other half.

Answers

The lines for each shape, the sorted letters, and a written description of the reflected half in question 4.

How teachers use it

End of unit

Set it as a ten-minute check after the symmetry lessons. The parallelogram quickly shows who still draws diagonals.

Letters aloud

Ask pupils to say each letter's lines aloud before they write it in the table. B tends to start an argument, and the note on the sheet settles it.

Catch-up

Pupils who miss question 4 repeat it with a small mirror held on the dashed line before the next lesson.
