Complete the Symmetric Figure

Year 4 MathsLines of Symmetry3 pages

About this worksheet

Completing symmetric figures for Year 4, over four pages. Pupils use a ruler to draw the missing half of eight shapes across a dashed mirror line on a squared grid. The shapes are an arrow, a house, an E-shape, steps, a podium and a boat hull, with vertical and horizontal mirror lines. The last two are challenges with a diagonal mirror line. Page 4 shows every finished figure. It follows England National Curriculum properties of shapes.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œcomplete a simple symmetric figure with respect to a specific line of symmetryโ€

All eight questions give half a figure and a mirror line, from a vertical line for the arrow to a diagonal line in questions 7 and 8.

What's inside this worksheet

Vertical Mirror Lines

An arrow and a house, each half drawn on a squared grid beside a dashed vertical mirror line. Pupils count squares to draw the other half.

E-Shape and Steps

An E-shape above a horizontal mirror line and a set of steps beside a vertical one.

Horizontal and Diagonal Mirror Lines

A podium and a boat hull above horizontal lines, then two challenge grids where the diagonal mirror line runs through grid corners. Pupils reflect each corner across the diagonal.

Answers

All eight completed figures in small grids, with each mirror line marked.

How teachers use it

Count the squares

Remind pupils to count squares from each corner to the mirror line and the same number on the other side. Pupils who guess by eye often get the steps wrong.

Diagonal challenge

Keep questions 7 and 8 for pupils who finish the first six quickly. Tracing paper turned over along the diagonal checks the answer.

Mirror check

Pupils hold a small mirror on the dashed line to see whether the figure looks whole.
