New Speaker, New Line

Year 4 EnglishSpeech Marks3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 4 worksheet on setting out dialogue. Page 1 prints a six-line conversation between Ella and Kofi about a lost dog called Barnaby as one squashed paragraph, with the speech marks already in place. Pupils rewrite it, starting a new line each time the speaker changes. Page 2 asks for four more lines of the conversation, with a photo of two pupils in a park. The key shows the conversation set out in six lines and gives a sample four-line continuation. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Rewrite the Conversation

A boxed paragraph that starts Have you seen my dog, Barnaby? asked Ella, and twelve lines to rewrite it on.

Continue the Conversation

A prompt to write four more lines as Ella and Kofi look for Barnaby, with a photo of two pupils holding a dog lead.

Answers

The six lines set out correctly, then a checklist for the continuation and an example of four new lines.

How teachers use it

Reading aloud

Ask two pupils to read the conversation, one as Ella and one as Kofi. The change of voice shows where each new line starts.

Drama link

Act out the continuation in pairs before pupils write it. They often find the four lines easier once they have spoken them.

Self-check

Pupils underline each speaker's name in their rewrite. If two names share a line, a new line is missing.
