Invent Similes for Pictures

Year 4 EnglishSimiles3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 simile sheet built on six picture boxes: a storm cloud, a sleeping cat, a rocket, a spider's web with dew, a crowded playground and a full moon. Pupils write one simile with like and one with as for each. On page two they choose their best simile and use it in a sentence or short paragraph that describes a scene. The key has two sample similes for every picture and a model scene. It follows England National Curriculum writing for years 3 and 4.

Invent Similes for Pictures

Six boxes with a small photo each. Under every photo are two lines headed Simile with like and Simile with as.

Describe a Scene

Pupils copy their best simile onto two lines, then write it into a sentence or short paragraph about what they can see, hear or feel.

Answers

Sample like and as similes for each picture, such as The storm cloud was as dark as charcoal, and a model scene about a garden spider's web.

How teachers use it

Picture talk

Show the six pictures on the board and take one like and one as simile for the storm cloud from the class. Pupils see the target before they write.

Writing lesson opener

Use page 1 as a ten-minute warm-up and move straight to page 2 as the main writing task.

Partner choice

Ask partners to pick each other's best simile from page 1 and say why. The writer then decides what goes into the scene.
