Find the Similes

Year 4 EnglishSimiles3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 4 similes sheet over three pages. A box defines a simile as a comparison using like or as. Pupils then work through ten sentences in a table, such as The baby's cheeks were as red as tomatoes and His voice boomed like thunder. They underline the simile and write the two things compared. Page two asks which similes use as and which use like. The key gives the underlined phrase and both things for every sentence. It follows England National Curriculum reading for years 3 and 4.

What's inside this worksheet

Simile table

Ten sentences with columns headed First thing and Second thing. Pupils underline the simile in each, from as red as tomatoes to climbed the tree like a monkey.

Sort the Similes

Two questions that send pupils back to page 1 to list the sentences, or the similes, that use as and those that use like. A photo of a galloping horse sits beside question 1.

Answers

The underlined simile and the two things compared for all ten sentences, then sentences 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 for as and 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 for like.

How teachers use it

Teaching the term

Read the box aloud, then do sentences 1 and 2 together on the board. Underline the whole phrase, from like or as to the end of the comparison.

Spot the pattern

After page 2, ask why five similes start with as and five with like. Some pupils will notice that as comes twice, as in as soft as.

Link to reading

Ask pupils to find two similes in the class novel and write the First thing and Second thing for each on scrap paper.
