Pronouns Check

Year 4 EnglishPronouns2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page pronouns check for Year 4, with the answer key on page two. Pupils circle the pronouns in a short passage about Maya and Ben practising maths. Next they rewrite Jess dropped Jess's bag. Jess picked up the bag, complete two possessive pronoun sentences (The toys belong to us and The hat belongs to you) and fix the unclear Sam told Leo that he had won. It follows England National Curriculum grammar for years 3 and 4.

What's inside this worksheet

Circle the pronouns

A short passage about Maya and Ben, with a photo of two pupils at a table. Pupils circle the pronouns.

Replace repeated nouns

Two sentences about Jess, her bag and the bag, to rewrite with pronouns.

Possessive pronouns

Two gaps in boxes, one after The toys belong to us and one after The hat belongs to you.

Fix the unclear sentence

Pupils rewrite Sam told Leo that he had won so the reader knows who won.

Answers

The circled pronouns, a sample rewrite for the Jess sentences, ours and yours, and four ways to fix the last sentence.

How teachers use it

End of unit check

Give it after the pronoun lessons and mark the circled pronouns first. A pupil who misses her and him may still think pronouns are only he and she.

Five-minute starter

Use question 4 on its own and collect three different fixes on the board. Ask the class which one they would choose.

Small group

Read the passage aloud with a group and stop at each pronoun. Ask what it stands for before anyone circles it.
