Conjunctions for Time

Year 3 EnglishConjunctions3 pages

About this worksheet

Time conjunctions for Year 3, over three pages. Page 1 shows five picture panels from a school trip to the zoo, from the gates at 9:00 am to home time at 3:00 pm. Pupils fill five gaps with when, before, after, while or until, using each word once, in sentences such as We ate our lunch ___ we saw the penguins at 10:00 am. Page 2 asks for four sentences about their own morning, using when, before, after and while once each. The key gives the five answers and four sample sentences. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

Curriculum objectives covered

Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

โ€œextending the range of sentences with more than one clause by using a wider range of conjunctions, including when, if, because, althoughโ€

Each gap joins two clauses with a time conjunction, and My Morning asks pupils to write four joined sentences of their own.

Writing - vocabulary, grammar and punctuation

โ€œExpressing time, place and cause using conjunctions (for example, when, before, after, while, so, because), adverbs (for example, then, next, soon, therefore), or prepositions (for example, before, after, during, in, because of)โ€

All five gaps express time, and pupils use the clock times on the panels to choose between before and after.

What's inside this worksheet

A Trip to the Zoo

A word bank of five conjunctions and five timed picture panels, with 12:30 pm for the picnic lunch and 1:30 pm for the lion enclosure. Under them are five sentences with one gap each.

My Morning

A picture of a pupil eating breakfast, a word bank of when, before, after and while, and lines for four sentences.

Answers

The five gap answers, with full sentences for two of them. Four sample morning sentences follow, such as I woke up when my alarm clock rang at seven o'clock.

How teachers use it

Timeline talk

Read the five panel times aloud first and ask what happened before and after each one. This helps with gap 3, where lunch comes after the penguins.

Oral rehearsal

Pupils say their morning sentences to a partner before they write, and the partner listens for the conjunction.

Checking the gaps

Gap 2 is the phrase all the while, so read it aloud first. Gap 1 could take before or until, so talk about why until is the answer once every word is used.
