What's inside this worksheet

Choose the Conjunction

Eight sentences, each with a gap and three bracketed choices. The answers use because, before, if, but, until, so, while and after, one each.

Explain and Write

Question 1 asks pupils why they chose because in sentence 1, on four lines. Question 2 asks for a sentence of their own with before.

The eight words in order, a model reason for question 1, and an example for question 2: I brush my teeth before I go to bed.

How teachers use it

Whiteboard voting

Read item 2 aloud with each of the three words in turn and ask pupils to vote on the one that sounds right. Then let them work through the page alone.

Reasoning talk

Use question 1 on page 2 as a talking task. Pairs say why because fits and the other two words do not, before anyone writes.

Support group

Pupils who find the page hard can do items 1 to 4 and question 2 on page 2, which asks only for a sentence with before.
