Time to Five Minutes

Year 2 MathsTelling the Time3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 2 time to five minutes, over two pupil pages and an answer key. A labelled clock at the top counts round in fives, with past on the right and to on the left. Pupils read ten clocks and write each time in words, from 5 past 3 to 10 to 7, including 25 to 8 and 20 past 12. Page 2 has four blank clocks for 25 past 1, 10 to 4, 5 past 9 and 20 to 6. It follows England National Curriculum measurement for Year 2.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

โ€œtell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these timesโ€

All ten clocks on page 1 are read to five minutes and written in words. The four blank clocks on page 2 ask for drawn hands.

What's inside this worksheet

How to read the minutes

A clock face labelled from 5 past round to 5 to, with quarter past, half past and quarter to marked as 15, 30 and 45. Three short rules cover counting in fives and when to say past or to.

Read and Write the Time

Ten clocks with two lines under each. Pupils write the time in words, like 5 past 3 or 20 to 2.

Draw the Hands on the Clock

Four blank clocks to show 25 past 1, 10 to 4, 5 past 9 and 20 to 6. A prompt asks pupils to look carefully at where the hour hand should go.

Answers

Each time in numbers and in words, such as 25 to 8 (twenty-five to eight), then where both hands point on the four drawn clocks.

How teachers use it

Count in fives first

Chant 5, 10, 15 up to 55 round the labelled clock before pupils start. Then do clock 8 together, since 5 to 5 sounds odd until it is said aloud.

Close hands

Clock 3 shows 20 past 4 with both hands close together. Show it large on the board and ask which hand is longer.

Next-day drawing

Use page 2 as a short independent task the day after. The 5 past 9 and 20 to 6 clocks show quickly who moves the hour hand.
