O'Clock and Half Past

Year 2 MathsTelling the Time3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 2 revision of o'clock and half past, over two pupil pages and an answer key. A Remember box says the minute hand points to 12 at o'clock and to 6 at half past, with the hour hand halfway between two numbers. Pupils read eight analogue clocks, including 3 o'clock, half past 7 and 12 o'clock, then draw both hands on four blank clocks. The key lists every time and where each hand points. It follows England National Curriculum measurement, where these times first appear in Year 1.

What's inside this worksheet

Remember

Two bullets. At o'clock the long minute hand points to 12. At half past it points to 6 and the short hour hand sits halfway between two numbers.

Read the Clocks

Eight clocks numbered 1 to 8 in two rows, four at o'clock and four at half past. Each has a box underneath for the time.

Draw the Hands

Four blank clocks labelled half past 2, 8 o'clock, half past 10 and 5 o'clock. Pupils draw the short hour hand and the long minute hand on each.

Answers

The time for all eight clocks, then a line for each blank clock saying where the minute hand and hour hand point, such as halfway between 10 and 11.

How teachers use it

Recap before five minutes

Run it as a recap before pupils move on to quarter past and quarter to. A pupil who writes half past 8 for clock 2 is reading the hour hand as 8.

Which hand is which

Draw clock 5 on the board and ask which hand is the minute hand. Its two hands are close in length, so pupils have to look at the thickness as well.

Paired drawing

Pupils swap Part 2 sheets and check each other's hour hands against the key. Half past 2 and half past 10 are the likeliest to go wrong.
