Telling the Time Check

Year 2 MathsTelling the Time3 pages

About this worksheet

A Year 2 telling the time check, over two pupil pages and an answer key. Pupils read six clocks, including half past 5, quarter to 8 and 10 to 9, and draw the hands for quarter past 11, 5 to 3 and half past 12. Two questions follow, one on the minutes in an hour and one on which is later, quarter to 4 or quarter past 4. The key gives every time in words and figures. It follows England National Curriculum measurement for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Read the Clocks

Two rows of three clocks, each with an answer box. The times are half past 5, quarter to 8, quarter past 1, 20 past 4, 10 to 9 and 25 past 6.

Draw the Hands

Three blank clocks for quarter past 11, 5 to 3 and half past 12.

Time Questions

Two questions in boxes. Pupils say how many minutes are in an hour, and which time is later, quarter to 4 or quarter past 4.

Answers

Each time in words and figures, such as 10 to 9 (or 8:50), and a line saying where both hands point on the three drawn clocks.

How teachers use it

End of unit

Give it once pupils have met o'clock, half past, quarter and five-minute times. Mark questions 1 to 6 first to see who can read the clocks.

Close hands

Clock 4 shows 20 past 4 with the hands close together. Ask pupils to say which hand is longer before they write the time.

Regroup after marking

Sort the sheets by question 7. Pupils who placed the hour hand just past 11 are ready to move on. Reteach the hour hand to the rest.
