Quarter Past and Quarter To

Year 2 MathsTelling the Time3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 2 quarter past and quarter to, over two pupil pages and an answer key. Two example clocks, quarter past 4 and quarter to 9, sit in boxes at the top. Pupils then draw lines from eight clocks to eight times in words, from quarter past 2 to 5 o'clock. Page 2 has four blank clocks for quarter past 8, quarter to 3, quarter past 12 and quarter to 12. It follows England National Curriculum measurement for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Examples

Two boxes each show a clock and a sentence about its hands. For quarter past 4 the minute hand points to 3, and for quarter to 9 it points to 9.

Match the Clocks

Clocks a to h, with eight times in words in a mixed order. Six are quarter past or quarter to, plus half past 3 and 5 o'clock. Pupils draw a line from each clock to its time.

Draw the Hands on the Clocks

Four blank clocks, with a tip that for quarter to 3 the short hour hand sits just before the 3.

Answers

The time for each clock a to h, then a line for each blank clock saying where the two hands point.

How teachers use it

Hour hand talk

Use the quarter to 9 example to show that the hour hand has not reached 9 yet. The two hands almost overlap in the printed example, so redraw it large on the board.

Matching lines

The times sit beside different clocks, so give pupils a ruler for the lines, or let them write the clock letter next to each time instead.

Quarter to first

Task 2 has two quarter to clocks, 3 and 12. Check those first, because the hour hand position is the hardest part.
