Toy Shop: Adding Prices

Year 2 MathsMoney3 pages

About this worksheet

Eight toys sit on a shop shelf, priced from 5p for a whistle to 60p for a kite. On page 1, pupils add the prices of two toys six times, such as ball and yo-yo or sticker book and car. Page 2 lists the prices again and asks for two pairs of toys that cost exactly 50p, the toy that costs the most and how much more the kite is than the car. The key shows each sum. It follows England National Curriculum work on adding and subtracting money.

Buying Two Toys

A shelf picture with eight labelled prices: ball 20p, car 35p, yo-yo 15p, kite 60p, bear 45p, whistle 5p, sticker book 25p and bubbles 10p. Six boxes ask for the total of two toys.

Toy Shop Challenges

The price list again, then three questions: find two pairs of toys that cost exactly 50p together, name the toy that costs the most, and find how much more the kite is than the car.

Answers

Each total with its sum, the two 50p pairs (yo-yo and car, bear and whistle), the kite, and 25p.

How teachers use it

Mental maths warm-up

Put the shelf on the board and ask for the cost of two toys. Pupils answer on whiteboards before they touch the sheet.

Pair hunt

Let pairs hunt for the two 50p pairs on page 2, then compare. Anyone who finds a third pair has made an adding slip.

Class shop

Set up a shop with the same prices and a 50p limit for each customer. Pupils decide what they can buy.
