Giving Change

Year 2 MathsMoney3 pages

About this worksheet

Pupils find change by counting on in this three-page Year 2 sheet. A worked example shows an apple at 35p paid for with 50p, with a number line that jumps +5p to 40p and +10p to 50p. Eight problems follow, four paid with 50p and four paid with £1, and a reminder that £1 is 100p. Page 2 has two word problems with pictures, one about a lolly and a drink and one about two 20p stickers. The key shows each subtraction. It follows England National Curriculum measurement.

The eight problems on page 1 ask for change, and both word problems on page 2 need an addition and a subtraction.

Measurement

“recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value”

Four problems are paid with £1, and the sheet reminds pupils that £1 is 100p.

What's inside this worksheet

Worked example

An apple costs 35p and is paid for with 50p. The number line jumps +5p to 40p and +10p to 50p, so the change is 15p.

Find the change

Eight boxes with a cost and an amount paid. Four use 50p (costs of 30p, 45p, 22p and 17p) and four use £1 (costs of 60p, 75p, 90p and 55p).

Word Problems

Sam buys a 40p lolly and a 25p drink and pays with £1. Ava has 50p and buys two 20p stickers. Each has a picture and a box for the answer.

Answers

All eight changes with the subtraction written out, then 35p for Sam and 10p left for Ava, with the two steps shown.

How teachers use it

Model counting on

Draw the example's number line on the board for a new cost, such as 28p paid with 50p, and ask pupils to name each jump.

Class shop

Run a shop with real coins. One pupil pays with 50p, and the shopkeeper gives change by counting on out loud.

Two-step talk

Both word problems need two steps. Ask pupils to say the first step to a partner before they write anything.
