Make the Same Amount

Year 2 MathsMoney3 pages

About this worksheet

This three-page Year 2 worksheet asks pupils to make one amount with different coins. Page 1 lists six amounts, 10p, 20p, 35p, 50p, 75p and £1, each with two boxes labelled Way 1 and Way 2 for drawing coins. Page 2 shows seven coins and asks for the fewest coins that make 15p, 40p, 80p and £1.50. The key gives one sample for each Way and the fewest-coin answers. It follows England National Curriculum measurement.

What's inside this worksheet

Two Ways to Make the Amount

A table with six amounts and two blank boxes beside each, Way 1 and Way 2. Pupils draw UK coins in the boxes.

Fewest Coins

A row of seven coins from 1p to £1, then four boxes asking for the fewest coins that make 15p, 40p, 80p and £1.50.

Answers

A sample for each Way, with a note to accept any two valid combinations, and the fewest-coin answers: 10p + 5p, 20p + 20p, 50p + 20p + 10p and £1 + 50p.

How teachers use it

Coins in hand

Give pupils a pot of real coins to build each amount before they draw it. 35p is the first one most pupils find tricky.

Which is fewer

Ask pairs to compare Way 1 and Way 2 for 75p and say which uses fewer coins. That leads straight into page 2.

Shop role play

Set a price of 80p and ask the shopkeeper to count out the fewest coins. Then ask the customer to find a different way.
