Coins and Notes

Year 2 MathsMoney3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 2 money worksheet on recognising coins and notes. Pupils match eight coins, labelled A to H, to value labels from one penny (1p) to two pounds (£2), then write the eight values from smallest to largest. Page 2 asks them to sort nine pictures into Coins and Notes, using £5, £10 and £20 notes, and to answer three short questions. Page 3 is the answer key. It follows England National Curriculum measurement, with money in pounds and pence.

Curriculum objectives covered

Measurement

“recognise and use symbols for pounds (£) and pence (p); combine amounts to make a particular value”

Pupils read the value on eight coins and three notes, and questions 3 and 4 ask how many 1p coins make 10p and how many 50p coins make £1.

What's inside this worksheet

Match and Order Coins

Pupils write the letter of each coin, A to H, beside a label such as twenty pence (20p) or one pound (£1). Then they write 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1 and £2 in order in eight boxes.

Sort Coins and Notes

Nine pictures, six coins and three notes, to sort into a two-column table headed Coins and Notes.

Money Questions

Which coin is worth the most, how many 1p coins make 10p and how many 50p coins make £1.

Answers

The letter for each coin, the ordered values, the completed sorting table and the three answers: £2, 10 and 2.

How teachers use it

Real coins first

Give each pair a bag of real coins and let them hold the real coin next to its letter on page 1 before they write.

Ordering check

After question 2, ask pupils to line up real coins in the same order and explain why £1 comes after 50p when 1 is smaller than 50.

Plenary

Read out values such as 5p and a £10 note and ask pupils to hold up a Coin or Note card.
