Roll or Stack Sort

Year 2 Maths3D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

A three-page Year 2 sorting sheet built around a Venn diagram. Page 1 shows six labelled shapes: sphere, cylinder, cone, cube, cuboid and triangular prism. Pupils write each name in the Rolls circle, the Stacks circle or the middle where the two overlap. Page 2 asks why a sphere can roll, why a cube can stack and for a classroom object that can roll and stack. The key puts the cone with the cylinder in the middle, because it rolls on its curved face and stands on its flat base. It follows England National Curriculum geometry.

Curriculum objectives covered

Question 1 sorts six solids by whether they roll, stack or do both, and question 4 asks for a real classroom object.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the Shapes

Six shape cards above a two-circle Venn diagram headed Rolls and Stacks. Pupils write each name in the right part.

Explain Your Thinking

Three questions with writing lines: why can a sphere roll, why can a cube stack, and name an object in your classroom that can roll and stack.

Answers

The sphere on its own, the cylinder and cone in the middle, the cube, cuboid and triangular prism under Stacks, and sample answers such as a glue stick or a tin of pencils.

How teachers use it

Test it first

Give pairs real solids to push across a tray and stack, then let them fill in the Venn diagram.

Cone discussion

Use the cone to talk about a shape that does both. Pupils try it on its side and on its base.

Talk before writing

Ask pupils to answer question 2 aloud to a partner, using the words curved and flat, before they write.
