3D Shapes Check

Year 2 Maths3D Shapes2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page Year 2 check on 3D shapes, with the answer key on page 2. Pupils name five shapes from a word bank: cone, cube, cylinder, sphere and square-based pyramid. They then count the faces, edges and vertices of a cuboid, tick the 2D shape on the end of a cylinder, and circle the shapes that can roll from a cube, sphere, cylinder and cuboid. It follows England National Curriculum geometry.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and facesโ€

Question 2 asks pupils to count the faces, edges and vertices of a cuboid.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]โ€

Question 3 asks for the 2D shape on the end of a cylinder.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œcompare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objectsโ€

Question 4 asks pupils to pick the shapes that roll.

What's inside this worksheet

Name the shapes

Five pictures in a row with the word bank above and a box under each for the name.

Count the cuboid

One cuboid and a table headed Faces, Edges and Vertices.

End of a cylinder

A tick-one question with Square, Triangle, Circle and Rectangle.

Which shapes roll

Pupils circle the shapes that can roll from a cube, a sphere, a cylinder and a cuboid.

Answers

The five names in picture order, 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices, circle ticked, and sphere and cylinder circled.

How teachers use it

End of the topic

Use it as a short assessment after the 3D shapes unit. The cuboid table shows who can count the hidden edges.

Quick starter

Take question 4 alone as a starter and ask pupils to say why the cube and cuboid do not roll.

Catch-up group

Give pupils who miss question 2 a real cuboid to hold and count with, then let them try again.
