2D Shapes on 3D Shapes

Year 2 Maths3D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

This Year 2 worksheet links 2D shapes to the faces of 3D shapes. Page 1 shows five solids: a cube, cuboid, cylinder, square-based pyramid and triangular prism. For each, pupils write which 2D shapes make its flat faces and how many of each. Page 2 asks what print each face would leave if it were dipped in paint, with five boxes for pupils to draw the print. The key accepts two answers for the cuboid. It follows England National Curriculum geometry.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify 2-D shapes on the surface of 3-D shapes, [for example, a circle on a cylinder and a triangle on a pyramid]โ€

Both pages ask pupils to name the 2D shape on a face, such as the circle on a cylinder and the triangle on a pyramid.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify and describe the properties of 3-D shapes, including the number of edges, vertices and facesโ€

Page 1 asks how many of each 2D face the five solids have.

What's inside this worksheet

Faces on 3D Shapes

A five-row table. Each row has a picture of a solid and the question: what 2D shapes are its faces, and how many of each?

Printing with 3D Shapes

Five boxes to draw a print of a cylinder's flat face, a cube's face, a pyramid's side face, a triangular prism's end face and a cone's flat base.

Answers

Face counts such as 2 circles for the cylinder and 2 triangles and 3 rectangles for the triangular prism, and the shape to draw in each print box.

How teachers use it

Real printing

Dip a real cube, cylinder and pyramid in paint on a tray and print them before pupils draw page 2.

Cuboid debate

The key accepts 6 rectangles, or 4 rectangles and 2 squares. Ask pupils which they chose and why.

Plenary

Ask what print a sphere would leave and why it is hard to say.
