Vertical Lines of Symmetry

Year 2 Maths2D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

Vertical lines of symmetry for Year 2, over three pages. Pupils tick yes or no for eight shapes that each have a dashed vertical line, then finish four half-shapes on a squared grid. The shapes include a square, a right-angled triangle, a heart, a parallelogram, a circle and a regular hexagon. The grid shapes are a rectangle, a triangle, a T-shape and an arrow. Page 3 is the answer key and shows all four completed shapes. It follows England National Curriculum geometry for Year 2.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical lineโ€

Task 1 asks pupils to decide whether eight dashed lines are lines of symmetry, and task 2 asks them to draw the matching half of four shapes.

What's inside this worksheet

Spot the Line of Symmetry

Eight cards, each with a shape and a dashed vertical line. Pupils tick Yes or No for square, right-angled triangle, rectangle, isosceles triangle, heart, parallelogram, circle and regular hexagon.

Complete the Shapes

Four half-shapes drawn on a squared grid beside a dashed mirror line. Pupils draw the other half of a rectangle, a triangle, a T-shape and an arrow.

Answers

Yes or No ticks for the eight cards and a picture of each completed shape on its grid.

How teachers use it

Fold a heart

Fold a paper heart down the middle and open it out before page 1. Pupils can then fold a cut-out right-angled triangle to see why its dashed line fails.

Grid practice

Before page 2, ask pupils to count squares from the mirror line out to each corner, then draw the matching corner on the other side.

Small mirrors

Pupils who find the grid hard can stand a small mirror on the dashed line and look at the reflection first.
