2D Shapes Carroll Diagram

Year 2 Maths2D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

A Carroll diagram task on 2D shapes for Year 2, over three pages. Pupils sort nine shapes into a two by two grid. The columns read 4 sides and not 4 sides, and the rows read has a curved side and no curved sides. The shapes are square, rectangle, kite, triangle, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, circle and semicircle. One box has no shape that belongs in it. Page 2 has two written questions and page 3 is the answer key. It follows England National Curriculum geometry for Year 2.

Questions 2 and 3 ask pupils to describe the empty box and the semicircle using sides.

What's inside this worksheet

Carroll Diagram

Nine labelled shapes sit above an empty Carroll diagram. Pupils write each name in the right box.

Think About the Shapes

Pupils write why the box for 4 sides and has a curved side is empty, then say where a semicircle goes and why.

Answers

A completed diagram. Square, rectangle and kite have four sides and no curve. Triangle, pentagon, hexagon and octagon have neither. Circle and semicircle have a curved side.

How teachers use it

Sort it on the floor

Cut out the nine shapes and sort them on a large floor grid before pupils write on the sheet. They see the empty box appear for themselves.

Semicircle talk

A semicircle has one straight side and one curved side, so pupils may disagree about its sides. Take feedback as a class and agree on the count.

Early finishers

Pupils who finish early can add a tenth shape of their own and say which box it joins.
