Name the 2D Shapes

Year 2 Maths2D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

Two tasks on 2D shapes for Year 2, over three pages. Pupils name eight numbered shapes from a word bank, then colour the four-sided shapes in a mix of fourteen and write how many they found. The shapes run from circle and triangle to pentagon, hexagon, octagon and semicircle. Some of the fourteen are turned or stretched, so pupils must count sides rather than rely on a picture they have seen before. Page 3 is the answer key. It follows England National Curriculum geometry for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Name Each Shape

Eight numbered shapes sit above a word bank of circle, triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon, octagon and semicircle. Pupils write one name on each of eight lines.

Find the Four-Sided Shapes

Fourteen outline shapes in different sizes and turns, including a square on its corner, a tilted rectangle and a trapezium. Pupils colour each shape with four sides, then write how many they coloured.

Answers

The eight names, and the count of five four-sided shapes: two squares, two rectangles and a trapezium.

How teachers use it

Shape warm-up

Hold up a card square on its corner before pupils start page 2 and ask what it is. The turned shapes on the sheet then make more sense.

Pairs check

Let pupils swap sheets after colouring and count each other's four-sided shapes. Watch the trapezium, which looks unlike the others.

Support and stretch

Pupils who need help can keep the word bank beside them. Others can cover it and write the eight names from memory.
