2D Shapes Check

Year 2 Maths2D Shapes2 pages

About this worksheet

A one-page 2D shapes check for Year 2, with the answer key on page 2. Pupils name five shapes from a word bank, then fill in the sides and vertices of a hexagon. Next they tick which of four shapes have a vertical line of symmetry, and last they draw a shape with four straight sides. It follows England National Curriculum geometry for Year 2 and works as an end-of-unit check.

Curriculum objectives covered

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œidentify and describe the properties of 2-D shapes, including the number of sides and line symmetry in a vertical lineโ€

Question 1 names five shapes, question 2 asks for the sides and vertices of a hexagon and question 3 asks about vertical lines of symmetry.

Geometry - properties of shapes

โ€œcompare and sort common 2-D and 3-D shapes and everyday objectsโ€

Question 4 asks pupils to draw a shape with four straight sides, which tests what they know about the sort.

What's inside this worksheet

Name the Shapes

A pentagon, a rectangle, a circle, a triangle and an octagon to name from a word bank of the same five words.

Sides and Vertices

A hexagon with a sentence to complete: it has a number of sides and a number of vertices.

Lines of Symmetry

Pupils tick the shapes that have a vertical line of symmetry from a square, a heart, a right-angled triangle and a rectangle.

Draw a Shape

A box for a shape with 4 straight sides, drawn with a ruler.

Answers

The five names, 6 sides and 6 vertices, the three ticks and a list of shapes that count for question 4.

How teachers use it

End of unit

Hand it out when the 2D shapes unit finishes and mark it the same day. Question 3 shows quickly who can judge the heart and the right-angled triangle.

Starter

Use questions 1 and 2 as a five-minute starter in the lesson after the unit, to see which shape names have stuck.

Marking question 4

Look at the range of shapes pupils draw. A square, rectangle, kite or trapezium all count, as does any other four-sided shape.
