Year 2 Maths2D Shapes3 pages

About this worksheet

Year 2 shape naming with twelve shapes drawn turned, stretched and at an angle, over three pages. Pupils count the sides of each one and write its name from a six-word bank. Two each of triangle, square, rectangle, pentagon, hexagon and octagon appear, among them a square on its corner and a long thin triangle. Page 2 asks whether a square is still a square when turned. Page 3 is the answer key. It follows England National Curriculum geometry for Year 2.

What's inside this worksheet

Name the Turned Shapes

Twelve numbered shapes, including a square turned on its corner, a long thin triangle, an upside-down triangle and a tall rectangle. Pupils count the sides and write each name in a box, using a word bank of six.

Think and Draw

Pupils write whether a square is still a square when you turn it, and why. Then they draw a triangle that looks different from their partner's.

Answers

Names for all twelve shapes, a model reason for the square question and a note on what a pupil's triangle must have.

How teachers use it

Turn a shape

Cut a square from card and spin it on the desk before page 1. Pupils see the same four sides and corners in every position.

Partner talk

Use question 2 on page 2 as a pairs task. Each pair compares two triangles and says what is the same about them.

Counting aloud

Pupils who guess from the picture can touch each side with a finger and count aloud before they write the name.
