Spot the Tense Mistake

Year 2 EnglishPast Tense3 pages

About this worksheet

Tense consistency for Year 2, over three pages. Page 1 has eight sentences, each with a time clue and one verb in the wrong tense, such as Yesterday I go to the park and On Monday she walk to school. Pupils circle the wrong verb and write the correct one. Page 2 asks which words show the action happened in the past, then asks for a sentence about last weekend with two past tense verbs. The key lists every circled verb and its correction. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Spot the Tense Mistake

A table of eight sentences with a column for the correct verb. The time clues include Last week, This morning and An hour ago. The verbs to fix run from go and play to paint and see.

Think and Write

Two questions with ruled lines. Pupils list the words that show the past, then write a sentence about last weekend with two past tense verbs.

How teachers use it

Clue-word hunt

Before pupils write, ask them to point at the word in sentence 1 that shows the action is over. Then repeat with sentence 5.

Peer marking

Pairs swap page 1 and check each other against the key. They then note which correction was hardest to spell.

Say it twice

Pupils say each corrected sentence aloud, once with the mistake and once without, so they hear the difference.
