Add -ed to Make the Past Tense

Year 2 EnglishPast Tense3 pages

About this worksheet

Past tense endings for Year 2, in two tasks over three pages. A rule box shows three spelling patterns: just add -ed, drop the e and add -ed, and double the last letter and add -ed. Pupils write the past tense of twelve verbs in a table, from walk and play to stop and hope. Page 2 has four sentences with a verb in brackets to change, such as Mum (bake) a tasty cake for tea. The key lists every answer. It follows England National Curriculum spelling and grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Rule Box and Verb Table

Three rules with an example each: jump, jumped, bake, baked and hop, hopped. Under them is a table of twelve verbs, including smile, like, clap and skip, with a space for each past tense.

Past Tense Sentences

Four sentences with a verb in brackets: play, bake, hop and walk. A picture of a boy kicking a football sits below them.

How teachers use it

Rule lesson

Teach the three groups with a fresh verb for each, such as help, dance and clap, before pupils open the table.

Colour the rules

Pupils colour the verbs by group once they have written them. The split is five that just add -ed, four that drop the e and three that double.

Spelling test

Read out the twelve verbs the next day. Hop and hope sit in different groups, so mark hopped and hoped together.
