About this worksheet

Present and past tense for Year 2, in two tasks with an answer key, over three pages. Task 1 gives fourteen verbs, such as runs, jumped, saw and swims, to sort into columns headed Present (now) and Past (already happened). Seven belong in each. Task 2 has eight sentences, from I am happy to The baby cried loudly. Pupils circle the verb and write now or past. The key shows the verb in every sentence. It follows England National Curriculum grammar.

What's inside this worksheet

Sort the Verbs

Fourteen verb cards, including is, was, ate and sings, and a two-column table to write them in.

Now or Past

Eight sentences in a table with a box to write now or past. Went, saw and jumped are in the past, and swims, eats and walk are in the present.

How teachers use it

Clap it out

Read each verb card aloud and ask pupils to clap if it has already happened. Is and was tend to catch pupils out.

Read the verb, not the clue

Only sentence 3 has a time clue, every day, so pupils have to rely on the verb itself for the rest.

Follow-on

Pupils write the other tense for sentences 1 to 4 on mini whiteboards, such as I was happy.
