Year 2 EnglishPast Tense2 pages

About this worksheet

A past tense check for Year 2, on one page with an answer key on page 2. Part 1 asks pupils to add -ed to jump, bake, hop and look. Part 2 covers four verbs that do not take -ed: go, see, eat and run. In Part 3, pupils fix the underlined verb in Yesterday I swim in the sea and Last night we eat pizza. Part 4 asks them to tick the past tense of come from comed, came and coming. It follows England National Curriculum grammar and spelling.

What's inside this worksheet

Add -ed

Four verb boxes: jump, bake, hop and look. A reminder points to the spelling rules for words ending in e and for a short vowel and a consonant.

Tricky Past Tense Verbs

Four more boxes for go, see, eat and run, which pupils change without using -ed.

Fix the Verb

Two sentences with an underlined present tense verb, swim and eat, beside a picture of a swimmer. Pupils write the past tense on the line.

Quick Question

A tick-box question asking for the past tense of come.

How teachers use it

End of unit

Give it out after the -ed and irregular verb lessons with nothing on the board, and note who writes hoped for hop.

Sorting the scripts

Put marked papers into three piles for intervention: -ed spelling, irregular verbs and tense in sentences. Parts 1, 2 and 3 line up with the piles.

Exit ticket

Use Part 4 on its own at the door. Comed is a typical slip, so ask pupils to say why came is right.
