Properties of Materials Cloze

About this worksheet

A three-page cloze passage for Year 1 science about the materials in a classroom and a playground. Pupils fill ten gaps from a bank of ten words, such as wood, see-through, waterproof and bendy. Each word is used once. The passage moves from the reading table and the window to the climbing frame, the flower bed wall, a ruler, a water bottle and a paper towel. A Your Turn box asks for one sentence about how a material feels. The answer key gives all ten words and two sample sentences. It follows the England National Curriculum.

What's inside this worksheet

Exploring Everyday Materials

Ten gaps in four short paragraphs. The reading table is wood and feels hard, the window glass is see-through and waterproof, and the paper towel feels soft.

Your Turn

Pupils pick one material from the word bank and write a sentence about what it feels like.

How teachers use it

Material hunt first

Walk the class past the window, the climbing frame and a low wall before the sheet, so every object in the passage is one they have touched.

Feely bag

Put a ruler, a paper towel and a plastic bottle in a bag. Pupils feel each one and say the word bank word before they write it.

Sentence modelling

Model one Your Turn sentence on the board, such as the sample about a cold, hard metal key.
