About this worksheet

A Year 1 science word search on everyday materials, set against the England National Curriculum. It has two pages. The first holds a 10 by 10 letter grid and a list of eight words to find: wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, rock, fabric and paper. Every word runs across from left to right or down from top to bottom, with no diagonals or backwards words. The second page is the answer key, which gives the start and end square of each word in the grid.

What's inside this worksheet

Everyday Materials

Pupils find and circle eight material names in a 10 by 10 grid. Four run across (fabric, glass, metal, paper) and four run down (plastic, rock, water, wood).

Answer key

The start and end grid square for each word, with its direction.

How teachers use it

Early finisher

Keep a stack for pupils who finish a materials sort early. Eight words in a small grid suits Year 1.

Spelling link

After the search, ask pupils to copy the eight words into two lists: materials they can see in the classroom and ones they cannot.

Hunt follow-up

Once a pupil circles a word, ask them to point to something in the room made of it, such as a glass window or a metal tap.
