Everyday Materials Exit Slip

Year 1 ScienceEveryday Materials2 pages

About this worksheet

An end-of-lesson exit slip on everyday materials for Year 1. Each slip asks pupils to name an object made of wood and to say what material a window is made from, with two lines for each answer. A row of five faces at the bottom lets pupils circle how they feel about today. Three identical slips fill two pages, two on the first and one on the second. There is no answer key. The slip follows the England National Curriculum unit on everyday materials.

Curriculum objectives covered

Everyday materials

โ€œDistinguish between an object and the material from which it is madeโ€

The two questions work in opposite directions. Question 1 starts from the material wood, and question 2 starts from the object window.

Everyday materials

โ€œIdentify and name a variety of everyday materials, including wood, plastic, glass, metal, water, and rockโ€

Partly met. Pupils name wood and glass only. Plastic, metal, water and rock are not on the slip.

What's inside this worksheet

Question 1

Pupils name an object made of wood, so they start from the material and find an object.

Question 2

Pupils say what material a window is made from, so they start from the object and name the material.

Circle how you feel about today

Five faces, from cross to grinning, for a quick self-check.

How teachers use it

After a materials hunt

Give the slip out after pupils have walked the classroom finding wooden objects. Question 1 then checks who can recall one without looking.

Quick sort

Read through the question 2 answers. Pupils who write see-through have given a property, not a material, so start there next lesson.

Faces row

Pair the faces with the answers. A grinning face beside a wrong answer for the window is worth a quiet chat.
