Kindergarten Social StudiesNeeds and Wants3 pages

About this worksheet

Twelve pictures and a two-column chart make up this 3-page kindergarten needs and wants sheet. Students cut and glue, or draw a line from, water, a toy car, bread, a video game, an apple, candy, a house, a doll, a warm coat, a balloon, a bed and a skateboard into NEEDS or WANTS. Part 2 shows six pairs, such as water and soda or a coat and a party hat, and asks students to circle the need. The answer key lists every sort.

What's inside this worksheet

Part 1 Sort the Pictures

A chart headed NEEDS and WANTS, with twelve numbered pictures in a dashed strip underneath. Students cut and glue each picture into a box, or draw a line to it.

Part 2 Circle the Need

Six boxes with two pictures each: water and soda, a house and a tent playhouse, an apple and a lollipop, shoes and a toy robot, a bed and a trampoline, a coat and a party hat.

Answers

A two-column table of the twelve sorted pictures, then the circled need in each of the six pairs.

How teachers use it

Teach the words first

Say that a need is something you must have to live and stay well, and a want is something nice to have. Keep the two words on the board while students sort.

Bed and house talk

Ask why a bed and a house are needs when a tent playhouse is not. Students often say a house keeps you warm and safe, which is the idea you are after.

Sort on the carpet

Print the picture strip on card, cut it out and let pairs sort on the carpet. They can move a card if they change their mind, then glue it down.
