Students write N or W under six pictures: a water bottle, a toy airplane, a sweater, a candy bar, a house and a game controller. Next they circle a thumbs up or a thumbs down for three sentences, We need water to live, A toy is a need and Food is a need, and then draw something they need. Page 2 is the answer key.

Read it aloud
Read items 7 to 9 aloud, one at a time, and let students circle their thumb. Those who do not yet read the sentences can still answer.
Quick assessment
Collect the sheets and sort them into piles by how many of the six N or W boxes are right. Re-teach with the water bottle and the game controller as your two examples.
