Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/"corners") and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).

Matching demands attribute analysis: students must see that the triangles' diagonal sides fit together and that two equal squares line up into a longer rectangle.

Part 1: Match the Shapes

A three-column table pairs each put-together diagram with an answer box. Two triangles make D (rectangle), two squares make C (long rectangle), two half-circles make A (circle), and the triangle over a square makes B (house shape).

Part 2: Shape Detective

Three plain outlines invite one straight line each: students split a square into 2 triangles (a corner-to-corner diagonal), a wide rectangle into 2 squares (a vertical line down the middle), and a circle into 2 half-circles.

How teachers use it

With cut-out shapes

Give pairs paper triangles, squares, and half-circles to physically slide together before matching. The small printed gap between shapes is an invitation to close it.

Both-directions lesson

Teach Parts 1 and 2 as opposites: putting together, then taking apart. Students who match two squares to the long rectangle but cannot find the line that splits it back have only half the idea.

Anchor chart material

The four compositions, including the house shape from a triangle and square, make a clean class anchor chart. Have students copy their favorite pair with dashed cut lines.
