Vocabulary Detective Training is a 3-page 5th grade review with a detective theme. Students use the Greek roots photo and tele to work out meanings, match four idioms and similes to what they really mean, and write a synonym and antonym for gigantic, cautious, and combine. The sheet touches L.5.4.a, L.5.4.b, L.5.5.a, L.5.5.b, and L.5.5.c. The answer page gives every choice and match, plus sample synonyms and antonyms such as huge and tiny.

Test review
Hand it out the week before a vocabulary check. The three sections take about 20 minutes and show which skill each student needs most.
Roots wall
After the sheet, add photo and tele to your roots wall. Students post more words, such as photograph and television, as they find them.
Accept other words
The answer page lists careful and reckless for cautious, but students will offer others, such as wary and careless. Accept any pair that fits.
