A 12 by 12 word search hides ten academic signal words, including however, although, moreover, and therefore. Every word reads left to right or top to bottom, so 5th graders can find all ten without hunting diagonals. The 2-page puzzle supports L.5.6, which names words that signal contrast, addition, and other logical relationships. The answer key gives the row, column, and direction for every word.

All ten words signal logical relationships. However and although show contrast, likewise and similarly show comparison, and therefore shows a result.
The grid holds ADDITION, ALTHOUGH, DESPITE, FINALLY, HOWEVER, INSTEAD, LIKEWISE, MOREOVER, SIMILARLY, and THEREFORE, with the word list printed below.
Each word has a start position, such as HOWEVER at Row 1, Column 1, reading left to right, and SIMILARLY running down Column 10.
After the search
Sort the ten words on the board by the job they do: contrast (however, although, despite), addition (moreover, addition), comparison (likewise, similarly), and result or order (therefore, finally). Instead can go under contrast.
Substitute day
Every word runs left to right or top to bottom, so a sub can check work fast against the key's row and column list.
