One outline map of the United States carries this 2-page 4th grade labeling sheet. Five leader lines, lettered A to E, point to the five regions. Students write West, Midwest, Northeast, Southwest, or Southeast on each line from the word bank. It takes about ten minutes and suits the first lesson of a regions unit. A is the West, B the Midwest, C the Northeast, D the Southwest, and E the Southeast.
First lesson
Hand it out before any reading. Southwest and Southeast are the pair students swap, so check D and E as you walk the room.
Color-code it
Have students shade each region a different color and add a small key. The sheet then serves as the reference map for the Venn diagram and the state sort.
Cold retake
A week later, fold the word bank under and ask for the five labels from memory. It takes two minutes and shows who still needs the map.
