About this worksheet

A gust of wind has scrambled the exhibit labels at the National Geography Museum, and 4th graders put them back. Sixteen labels mix states (California, Florida, Ohio, and Maine), landmarks such as the Grand Canyon and Cape Cod, and products such as maple syrup and cotton. Students sort them into Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and West, four per region. Two Curator's Notes questions follow. The 3-page sheet matches C3 Framework D2.Geo.3.3-5, and the answer key shows the full sort with sample replies.

The sorted table, plus a model note on why the Great Lakes are tricky: they border New York as well as the Midwest.

How teachers use it

Four regions, not five

This sort has no Southwest column, so the key puts the Grand Canyon in the West. Tell students first if they learned the five-region map.

Ski resorts

Ski resorts sit under West in the key, but students who know Vermont will argue for the Northeast. Accept either with a reason in question 1.

Card sort

Cut the word bank into 16 cards and let pairs sort on their desks before anyone writes. Moving cards makes it easier to change their minds.
