Identifying Lines and Angles

4th Grade MathGeometry4 pages

About this worksheet

A geometry review for 4th grade that runs across Common Core 4.G.1, 4.G.2 and 4.G.3 under a detective theme. Students match five definitions to terms from a printed word bank (ray, parallel lines, perpendicular lines and the angle types) and sketch each one, question a right trapezoid ABCD and a right triangle PQR about parallel sides, perpendicular segments and right angles, then judge whether a dashed vertical line through a six-pointed star is a true line of symmetry. Counting questions on a non-square rectangle and a scalene triangle finish the sheet. Answers included.

Curriculum objectives covered

4.G.1

โ€œDraw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.โ€

Section 1's definition matching and sketches, plus naming the perpendicular segments in trapezoid ABCD.

4.G.2

โ€œClassify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.โ€

The Section 2 classifications: the trapezoid's parallel and right-angle questions and the identify-the-right-triangle item for PQR.

4.G.3

โ€œRecognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry.โ€

All of Section 3, from the star's dashed line to the zero-line scalene triangle.

What's inside this worksheet

Section 1: Identify Lines and Angles

Five definitions, such as "Lines in a plane that stay the exact same distance apart and never intersect," match to a six-term word bank, so one term (right angle) goes unused. Each answer also needs a sketch.

Section 2: Classify 2D Shapes

Trapezoid ABCD gets three questions on parallel pairs, perpendicular segments and its right-angle count. Triangle PQR gets a four-option classification plus questions on its acute angle and whether PQ and QR are parallel or perpendicular.

Section 3: Symmetry Challenge

A six-pointed star wears a dashed vertical line for a judge-and-explain item, followed by the total count of its symmetry lines and quick counts for a non-square rectangle and a scalene triangle.

How teachers use it

Unit closer

The three sections mirror the three standards, so a quick score per section maps directly onto what to reteach.

Sketch check

The Section 1 sketches expose more than the term lines do. A correct word above a wrong drawing means the definition never landed.

Debate starter

Question 12 (does the dashed line cut the star symmetrically?) runs well as a thumbs vote before anyone writes. Demand the fold test in every explanation.
