Weekend homework and choosing your own seat are the first two debates in this four-page set of 4th grade opinion writing sentence frames. Students write claims with "because" and "in order to," add evidence after "For instance" and "In addition," and finish with a letter to the principal about a four-day school week. The frames cover W.4.1.a through W.4.1.d. An answer key offers model answers, though responses will vary.
W.4.1.a
“Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose.”
Section 1 asks for a clear claim on each of three topics, and the principal letter groups the claim and reasons in order.
W.4.1.b
“Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.”
Section 2 asks students to back up each reason with a fact or detail, such as what happens with extra recess time.
W.4.1.c
“Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in addition).”
Students link reasons with "in order to," "For instance," and "In addition" throughout the frames.
W.4.1.d
“Provide a concluding statement or section related to the opinion presented.”
The last line of the principal letter, "For these reasons, I hope you will decide to," gives a concluding statement.

Students extend three started arguments about a longer recess, an allowance for chores, and banning junk food from the cafeteria after "For instance" or "In addition."

Language support
Frames give students the sentence shape, so they can put their energy into the reason. Let them talk through Section 1 with a partner before writing.

Section 3 works as a first draft of a real letter. Students can copy their finished paragraph onto letter paper and add their own closing and signature.
Spotting weak reasons
On question 3, many students write "because it is fun." Push them to name something specific that happens in that subject.
