Multiplying by Multiples of 10

3rd Grade MathMultiplication and Division4 pages

About this worksheet

This 3rd grade sheet builds facts like 3 × 40 in three steps over three pages. First, students count base-ten rods drawn in groups, such as 3 groups of 4 tens, and write the total as tens and then as a number. Next come 12 facts with the tens step printed, so 6 × 50 reads 6 × 5 tens. The last page has 12 quick facts, including 7 × ___ = 630, and three short items like 9 rows of 80 chairs. It covers Common Core 3.NBT.3, and a fourth page lists all 31 answers.

Curriculum objectives covered

3.NBT.3

“Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.”

Every item multiplies a one-digit number by a multiple of 10 from 20 to 90, and the rods on page 1 show the place value step.

What's inside this worksheet

Place Value Warm-Up

Four base-ten pictures (3 × 4 tens, 2 × 5 tens, 4 × 2 tens and 3 × 3 tens). Students write the number of tens, then the product.

Tens Step

Twelve facts from 4 × 30 to 7 × 40, each rewritten as a number of tens before the answer blank.

Speed Drill and story items

Nine products such as 8 × 70 and 9 × 60, three missing factors like ___ × 90 = 720, and three totals such as 8 packs of 40 stickers.

Answers

Every product and missing factor, with the rod pictures answered as 12 tens = 120 and so on.

How teachers use it

Build it first

Hand out real base-ten rods and make 3 groups of 4 tens before page 1. The drawings then look like the model on the desk.

Say the unit

Ask students to read 6 × 50 aloud as six times five tens. Saying the unit helps the ones who drop a zero or add an extra one.

Exit question

Use the three missing-factor items on page 3 as an exit check. A student who writes 50 for ___ × 30 = 150 is still unsure where the ten goes.
