About this worksheet

Planning My Awesome Story is a mind map for a personal narrative about an amazing time. 2nd grade students write The Big Topic on a line, then fill six branch boxes: Who Was There, The Setting, The Big Action, My Feelings, Sensory Details and one branch they name. Each box has two prompts, and the directions tell students to cross out ideas that do not fit the main topic. It supports Common Core W.2.5 by focusing a topic before drafting. There is no answer key, since every map is different.

How teachers use it

Day one of a unit

Use the map on the first day of a personal narrative unit. The Big Action box turns into the order of the draft.

The cross-out step

After the boxes are full, ask each student to cross out one idea that wanders from the topic. It is the step most students skip.

Oral rehearsal

Partners tell their story using only the map, one branch at a time, before they start the draft.
