Informative Writing Frames

2nd Grade ELAWriting3 pages

About this worksheet

Sentence frames take 2nd grade writers through the parts of a short report. In Part 1, students read a fact box about honey bees and complete four frames: topic introduction, definition, fact and conclusion. Part 2 repeats the pattern for an animal they choose, starting from "Have you ever wanted to learn about ______________?" Part 3 asks for one definition sentence that uses the word habitat. The frames follow Common Core W.2.2, and the answer key models a frog report next to the bee answers.

Part 1 asks students to pull their answers from the honey bee Fact Box.

What's inside this worksheet

Using Facts in Sentences

A Fact Box says honey bees live in hives, collect nectar and help plants grow. Students fill frames such as "A honey bee is a type of ______________ that ______________."

Write a Mini-Report

Four frames to chain together about any animal: an intro, a definition, an interesting fact and a conclusion.

Vocabulary Challenge

One frame, "A habitat is a ______________ where ______________.", for a sentence about where an animal lives.

Answer key

Bee answers such as insect and sweet nectar, plus a model frog report about an amphibian that starts its life in the water.

How teachers use it

Model with bees

Do Part 1 together on the board. Question 4 is the only open conclusion in that part, and students copy its pattern in Part 2.

Research center

Put animal books in a center and let students choose their Part 2 animal there. The frames go faster with a fact open in front of them.

Plan for a report

Keep the Part 2 frames and use them as the plan for a longer informative piece later in the week.
