About this worksheet

This 4-page 1st grade social studies sheet turns community helpers into riddles. Riddles 1 to 4 sit on page 1 and riddles 5 and 6 on page 2, each with three first-person clues and a line for the answer. A picture word bank lists firefighter, mail carrier, doctor, farmer, bus driver and librarian. Page 3 asks students to write two clues of their own and draw the helper. The key gives the six answers.

What's inside this worksheet

Who Am I

A word bank with a small picture for each helper, then riddles 1 to 4. Examples are 'I use a hose to put out fires.' and 'I plant seeds and help food grow.'

More Riddles

Riddle 5 about a bus driver and riddle 6 about a librarian, three clues each, with a line for the answer.

Write Your Own Riddle

Two clue lines that start with I, a line to finish 'I am a', and a box to draw the helper.

Answers

The six answers and a note on what to check in the student's riddle and drawing.

How teachers use it

One clue at a time

Read only the first clue of a riddle and let students guess, then read the second. Riddle 3 suits this, since 'sick or hurt' fits more than one helper until the clue about the heartbeat.

Swap and guess

Have students swap page 3 with a partner and guess each other's helper before they read the 'I am a' line.

Riddle board

Post the finished riddles on a board with the drawing folded over the answer. Families can lift the flap.
